Industry
Industry, particularly around ports and wharfs, is a vital part of the UK economy and logistics infrastructure. Often sites need to operate 24/7 due to capacity on the rail network, tidal restrictions for loading / unloading or simply to avoid congestion on the roads.
BS 4142 and Industrial Noise Assessment
British Standard (BS) 4142:2014 +A1:2019 “Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound” is the most commonly used methodology for the assessment of sound from industrial, commercial and manufacturing processes, M&E plant and equipment, loading and unloading of goods and materials, and mobile plant / vehicles on the site. It can be used to assess sound from proposed, new, modified or additional industrial / commercial sources, at existing or new premises used for residential purposes.
Assessing Noise Impact
BS 4142 describes methods to measure and determine ambient, background and residual sound levels, and the rating levels of industrial / commercial sound. BS 4142 describes subjective and objective methods to establish any adjustment for the characteristics of a specific sound (tone, impulse, intermittent or other acoustic feature).
The level of impact is assessed by comparing the rating level of the specific sound source with the background sound level. Typically, the greater the difference, the greater the level of impact (depending on the context).
How Can We Help?
Many major sites in London and across the UK have been redeveloped including new mixed use developments within close proximity of long established industry. The “agent of change” principle is key when considering new residential or new industrial developments. WBM assists our clients in negotiations with relevant authorities and representatives of adjacent sites to seek solutions that would allow the development of those sites as well as continued operation of the industrial activity.
Other specialist sectors
WBM has long been associated with environmental, architectural and building acoustics both here in the UK and abroad.
