Acoustic Design Considerations
The acoustic design of leisure facilities is extremely important, especially where high noise and low noise spaces sit side by side.
For many entertainment and leisure complexes a tailored assessment approach will be needed that takes account of the different noise sources (for example any plant noise would be assessed using BS 4142), any requirements of the local authority and bespoke guidance drawn up by the industry or in-house company guidance.
Relevant Standards and Guidance
Guidance on acoustic standards for gyms can be found in ProPG: Gym Acoustics Guidance including testing methods and suggested criteria.
Sport England published guidance on artificial grass pitches (AGPs), which has been used as a basis for assessment from a number of leisure sources. The guidance suggests an upper guideline value of 50 dB LAeq,1hour based on World Health Organisation Community Noise Guidelines (1999) and that where the new source does not exceed the existing noise climate by more than 3dB, this can be considered a “slight” impact.
For live music, sports or entertainment and depending on the type of venue, guidance can be found in the Institute of Acoustics Good Practice Guide for Control of Noise from Pubs and Clubs or the Noise Council’s Code of Practice on Environmental Noise Control at Concerts.
