Logistics Institute University of Hull – M&E Plant

Project Brief

The Logistics Institute at the University of Hull is a world-class centre of excellence in global logistics and supply chain management and is part of the University Business School. The University undertook to refurbish the existing Logistics Institute NIDD Building and to construct a new 3 storey link block connecting the NIDD Building to the ESK Building.

WBM was commissioned by Silcock Leedham LLP to provide professional acoustic services required for a specific noise assessment of the proposed roof mounted plant both in accordance with BS 4142 and as part of the client’s requirement to achieve credits under BREEAM.

Acoustic Aspects

The BREEAM assessment required that “sources of noise from the development do not give rise to the likelihood of complaints from existing noise sensitive premises”. The new link block roof was provided with a plant deck to accommodate the mechanical services plant and this area overlooked nearby noise sensitive dwellings.

Outcome

WBM carried out baseline noise surveys during the day and evening to establish the relevant baseline noise levels for the periods that the plant would operate. A detailed plant noise assessment was undertaken to demonstrate that the plant noise levels during all operating periods would be acceptable in terms of a BS 4142 assessment and would also meet the requirements of BREEAM. The plant now quietly serves the University’s world-class centre of excellence in global logistics and supply chain management.
