Energy from Waste – Detailed Plant Noise Assessment

Project brief: SITA approached WBM due to our extensive knowledge of mineral and waste sites and related activities to advise on proposals for two energy from waste (EfW) facility sites in Surrey. Consideration was given at one of the sites for the provision of a bottom ash recycling plant, to separate out metal and other solid residues that remain after the EfW process as part of the wider recycling processes associated with these facilities.

Acoustic aspects: Detailed noise measurements were required at an existing EfW site in Kirklees, including measurements within the tipping hall, near to the turbines and on the roof in the vicinity of external plant and steam vents. The measurements were repeated with a specialist noise consultant to Surrey County Council and allowed detailed and robust noise calculations.

Outcome: Our detailed approach, including witnessed noise measurements, analysis and calculations led to conditions on noise to be agreed. Our involvement in these projects gives WBM a depth of knowledge that can be used to benefit operators of similar EfW facilities.
