The acoustic requirements of buildings are driven by their proposed use, activities within the building and the surrounding environment. Compulsory acoustic performance requirements exist for certain developments, such as those stipulated in the Building Regulations. For many building types there are no mandatory requirements and the performance is stipulated via the need for BREEAM credits or guidance documents relating to acoustic performance.
Examples are health buildings (Department of Health – Acoustics: Technical Design Manual, HTM 08-01), courts (Court Standards and Design Guide) and schools (BB93 2014). General guidance can be found in British Standard BS 8233 and specific performance criteria may be indicated within bespoke employer’s requirements documents or BREEAM.
