M&E and Building Services

An integral part of any building development, both in new build and refurbishment projects of any size, is the mechanical and electrical services systems and associated plant, also termed HVAC. As an alternative and environmentally friendly option, the need for mechanical services plant may be minimised by the use of natural ventilation systems, night cooling via exposed thermal mass and/or mixed mode operation; where mechanical and natural systems work in tandem to achieve optimal energy efficiency. Natural ventilation systems are very common, for example within new school developments.

Whichever system is employed in a building there will be noise control issues requiring control of noise from plant, internally and externally, and control of noise break-in and break-out through the building envelope and façades. Many of the acoustic considerations are intrinsically linked with the above systems and early advice from an acoustic specialist is essential to achieve an effective optimal solution.

WBM coordinate directly with the architect, building services consultant, M&E contractor and other professionals to ensure that appropriate noise criteria are set and achieved. Close communication between acoustic consultants and building services consultants and contractors is critical. WBM also liaise closely with the Local Planning Authority and EHOs to help deliver workable solutions that harmonise the acoustic requirements of both the surrounding and internal building environments with the essential thermal and ventilation needs of the building.

WBM provides a service from feasibility to final acoustic testing, offering expertise in; noise surveys, plant noise assessment, BS4142:1997 assessment, establishing services noise specifications, criteria for internal and external noise levels, liaising with Local Planning Departments & EHOs, system assessments and attenuation requirements, ventilated façade assessments, site inspection and compliance testing or witnessing.

In addition to the above WBM can offer a trouble-shooting service for clients who have existing noise and vibration problems. WBM can undertake detailed site surveys and plant noise assessments and provide technical advice to achieve a solution to noise and vibration problems.
