The acoustic performance of new schools and new school buildings is part of the Building Regulations as Regulation 4 of Approved Document E 2003, with the requirements set out in Building Bulletin 93 (BB93). Mandatory performance requirements are required for indoor ambient noise levels, internal sound insulation, speech transmission index and the control of reverberation. Incorrect designs could result in parts of the new school being non-compliant with regard to the Building Regulations.
WBM provides a comprehensive service including acoustic advice on the initial feasibility and design of the school, assessment of proposed constructions and finishes, recommendations and preparation of a BB93 assessment report. We provided advice and prepare BB93 assessments for local authorities, architects and contractors for many new school projects ranging from single classroom extensions to complete new schools.
In addition to the mandatory requirements of BB93, WBM offers guidance and advice on additional issues such as music and drama performance spaces, recording studios, noise break-out from after-school use of facilities and noise from external plant. We also supply advice on achieving BREEAM credits for acoustic performance and provide the relevant assessment reports to demonstrate how the credits can be achieved.
Acoustic testing can be undertaken to demonstrate compliance with the BB93 performance requirements.
Our advice on educational buildings is not limited to schools. We have worked with a number of colleges, universities and adult learning centres, using BB93 and other relevant documents for guidance and assisting clients in meeting specific BREEAM needs.
