WBM is able to offer detailed advice, based on measurements and computer modelling, for motorway and other road traffic noise, as well as for railway and other guided transport system noise and aircraft noise. WBM has undertaken work for governmental departments, planning authorities and developers.
Road traffic continues to be the dominant noise generator in Britain. WBM has measured and advised on the impact of various road surfaces, including the new low noise surfaces. WBM has advised on the development of new urban developments alongside busy roads and motorways and has advised on the noise impact relating to motorway service areas. WBM is able to computer model road noise propagation and plan the best means of mitigation for noise sensitive areas. This allows new roads to have minimal impact on existing housing and new housing beside existing roads to conform to current environmental standards. Noise surveys both before and after development allow the predictions to be checked.
The growth in urban and inter-city rail travel and the increased use of railways to move freight have had an impact on rail noise generation. Computer modelling of railway noise using approved methods and the investigation of mitigation measures enables both new railways and train care depots and housing to co-exist within recognised national criteria. The encouragement of freight to move to rail has led to an increase in the use of freight terminals, rail loading facilities and tracks, particularly at night. WBM has worked with developers to gain permission for extended periods of operation by careful analysis of the present situation and assessment of future mitigation needs.
Assessments of aircraft noise, both in the air and on the ground, are undertaken. WBM use Integrated Noise Model (INM) to predict in-flight noise levels from both civilian and military aircraft movements. Ground based noise is calculated and assessed using noise mapping software over defined areas. Assessments for small general aviation aerodromes and for large military installations have been undertaken. |
